Undergraduate Bachelor of Arts Audition:

Admission to the Department of Dance is selective. In addition to being accepted into the University of Iowa, prospective dance majors and minors must also audition for acceptance into the Department of Dance. Prospective students are strongly advised to apply to The University of Iowa Admissions prior to registering for the dance audition.

Prospective students are required to attend one audition from the following dates:

Thursday, November 5, 2009 – Audition form due Monday, November 2, 2009

Friday, November 6, 2009 – Audition form due Monday, November 2, 2009

Thursday, February 11, 2010 - Audition form due February 1, 2010

Friday, February 12, 2010 - Audition form due February 1, 2010

Please note: Prospective undergraduate students (non Dance majors) wishing to enroll in ballet or modern technique classes ranked above the continuing level must also audition for proper placement levels prior to enrolling in these courses.

*All auditions must take place on above dates except for international prospective students who may submit a DVD. Please contact Charlotte Adams for further information.

Audition Form

After determining the audition date that you want to attend, the next step is filling out the Audition Form online and submitting it with your preferred date. We will confirm your audition date via email. (Please note audition form due dates above.)

Audition Day Schedule

9:00-9:30 Registration

9:30-10:30 Ballet technique audition
Purpose: To assess technical proficiency and potential in ballet for prospective dance majors and class placement level.

10:30-11:30 Modern technique audition
Purpose: To assess technical proficiency and potential in modern for prospective dance majors and class placement level.

11:30-12:15 Solo auditions for the ICA (Iowa Center for the Arts) Scholarship applicants
Purpose: For prospective dance majors who have submitted an application for the $5,000 Iowa Council on the Arts Scholarship to perform prepared solos.

12:15-12:45 Question and Answer session
Purpose: A session for all prospective dance students to learn more about the dance program from a panel of faculty and dance majors who will share information and answer questions.

12:45-1:30 Lunch
The Iowa Memorial Union has a variety of food options and is located directly across the street from the dance building. You are welcome to bring your lunch to the Q & A session.

1:30-2:00 On-site writing exercise
Purpose: To assess writing and critical thinking skills for prospective dance majors.

2:00-3:00 Improvisation session
Purpose: To assess movement improvisation and choreographic aptitude, including ability to explore, innovate, organize, and perform one’s own movement material.

Additional Information

The first class begins promptly at 9:30a.m. Prospective Dance Majors and Minors are expected to stay for the entire audition and to arrive at the Dance Office, E114 Halsey Hall, at 9:00 AM to register.

Additional ICA (Iowa Center for the Arts) Scholarship Information

Those prospective dance majors applying for a scholarship should be prepared to perform a solo of their choice, not to exceed two minutes. The choreography can be the dancer’s own or the work of someone else.

Those auditioning for the ICA Scholarship must submit the undergraduate Audition Form online and download the ICA Scholarship form. Please fill out the application form, include the other required information listed on the second page of the application, and mail to:

Please wear a solid color leotard and tights (pink or black).
