Application Season for Fall 2021

All prospective graduate students will be invited to participate in a digital audition and interview process. Those auditioning for a Teaching Assistantship will be required to submit a video of teaching, and will also be invited to present a beginning, continuing, or intermediate level class for non-majors as a guest teacher on a digital platform. Please refer to the Graduate Program Application Information page for application requirements.

Audition Dates

Application review will begin October 15, 2020, and will continue until March 1, 2021. Early admission decisions will be extended by Friday, December 18. Priority for all other applications will be given to those submitted by Monday, January 18, 2021. 


Audition Materials

After application materials are received, applicants will receive confirmation of their invitation for a remote audition and interview. One week prior to your interview date, you will submit:

  • Teaching Video
    • 30 minutes
    • Any level or genre
    • 2 or more studente
    • In person or virtual
  • Audition Solo Video
    • 2-minute (minimum) to 5-minute (maximum)
    • Showcases your talents in the chosen emphasis of choreography or performance
    • Title/working title required; music, collaborator, and/or choreography credits included
    • Please take care to ensure the solo is filmed at close range (please no balcony shots)


Audition/Interview Timeline

  • Audition and Interview Scheduled Individually

  • One week prior: submit audition video links to Alex Bush (

  • Digital Interview Components Include:

    • Zoom Teaching Audition

    • Interview with the Graduate Program Committee

    • Meeting with Director of Graduate Studies, Jennifer Kayle and Department Chair, Rebekah Kowal

    • Virtual Lunch Meeting with one or more current UI Dance graduate students, including a presentation on Iowa City, the university, and the campus community
