Graduate MFA Auditions

Prospective graduate students must be invited to attend an on-campus audition. It is a two-day campus visit. Those auditioning for a Teaching Assistantship will teach a beginning, continuing, or intermediate level class for non-majors.  An invitation to audition on campus will be extended upon successful screening of all required applicant materials by the Dance Department Faculty. Please refer to the Graduate Program Application Information page for application requirements.

Audition Dates

  • Monday, January 28, 2019 and Tuesday, January 29, 2019 or
  • Wednesday, Feburary 4, 2019 and Thursday, February 5, 2019

Audition Materials

All application materials must be complete prior to the audition date. After materials are received, applicants will receive confirmation of their audition date and campus visit by mid-January.

All auditioning dancers should be prepared to perform a 2-minute (minimum) to 5-minute (maximum) solo dance that showcases their talents in the chosen track of choreography or performance. Solos are performed for the faculty and other candidates in an informal setting, followed by a short group discussion. Candidates may be asked to share a few thoughts regarding their reasons for applying to an MFA Program at this time.

Audition Schedule

Day 1

Teaching auditions will be scheduled on the first or second day at one of the folloing times:

  • 8:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 2:00 p.m., or 3:30 p.m.

10:00 a.m.  Ballet Technique Audition

11:30 a.m.  Lunch discussion with current MFA Students

12:30 p.m. Modern Technique Audition

5:00 p.m. Tour

Day 2

10:00 a.m.   Warm-up 

11:30 a.m.  Solo audition and discussion with faculty

12:30 p.m. Meeting with Graduate Co-Directors

On day 1 of the audition, applicants are encouraged to arrive at the Dance Office, E114 Halsey Hall, by 8:15 a.m.  if they are teaching at 8:30 a.m., and by 9:45 a.m.  if their first item on the schedule is the ballet audition.
