The seniors in the University of Iowa's Department of Dance's 2020 graduating class have gotten a crash course in creating screen dance over the past month.

"For me personally, it was a little bit of an emotional process at first," said Emily Buttolph. "It was reframing a project that's been on my mind for the past year. For the past couple of years."

Soon after the end of a University of Iowa spring break elongated by the COVID-19 pandemic, Buttolph and her classmates were told that the senior performances they'd been prepping for wouldn't happen. At least, not in the traditional fashion.

Performances that had been conceived of in the context of a physical theater had to be adapted or scrapped entirely to fit on a digital platform.
